Pair of pliers or wire cutters. Cut 1-1.5" pieces of newspaper wire. Bend them into a "U" shape. Get red rubber bands (they were the best and lasted longest). Loop rubber band over thumb and index fingers. Put the "U" shape wire on the rubber band, pull back and let 'er fly. We called these projectiles "staples." If you're shooting each other indoors, women's bobby pins worked fine. Outside, the bobby pins would seem to be caught up by the wind and not go as far as the staples.
That's what those of us who were too poor to afford Daisy air rifles used in the 50s. Air rifles weren't allowed within city limits anyway.

Did you ever make matchguns out of clothespins that light and launch kitchen matches ?
When I was a kid I remember carrying a spit ball gun, in school (GASP)
It was a pen tube about 5" long and a 4" long nail that fit inside the tube. When no one was looking I would make a spit ball put it in one end of the tube make another spit ball put it into the other end of the tube then push the nail into the pen tube and the air pressure would build up until the first spit ball burst out of the tube at considerable velocity and for distance.
Silly it was. Today I would be expelled for terrorism.

Yep. Managed to put one into the living room curtains. I managed to put out the fire before it burned down the house.
