I asked a woman who cut my hair yesterday if there was a difference between layering and feathering, and she said they were the same. That's not right, is it??
I cut my hair in layers, but I haven't had feathered hair since I was in school in the '80s and it was a "thing." I think it has to do with the layer length and how you style it. My layers are much longer than they were when my hair was feathered.

When my hair was feathered, it was layers that were only in the front part of my hair. Generally, layers would be from my ears forward. The back could be all one length or have layers. The front layers would be styled brushed or curled back and away from my face. Feathers were also called "wings".
There was a disconnect between the front and back of the hair, when the hair was feathered. It wasn't really blended with the back of the hair.
Then we started blending the front and back (adding layers in the back of the hair) and that was referred to as "layers".
