Leaving to Seattle next Tuesday. Leaving from Miami, where temperatures are reaching about the 90s. I've been looking at the weather in Seattle for the past week, and it seems to be fluctuating a lot in the mornings. I've seen 75, 87, 72. But at night I've seen low 50s.

How should one dress for this weather?

Many of us who've lived here for a long time wear shorts and tee shirts, as long as it's sunny out and at least 55 degrees.
But for the others, layering is indeed the key. A tee shirt, with a long sleeve shirt over it. If it's cooler, a hooded sweatshirt over it. Bring something lightweight but water resistant, like a jacket with a hood. Being from Florida, you might find it freezing. I don't think you'll need something like a down jacket, but my Southern California relatives do complain about the cold here ( when it's partly cloudy and 60), and I'm walking around in shorts and a tee shirt.

I am a native, but I don't wear shorts unless it's above 75 or so. Anything below that is cool enough for jeans. Maybe I just have ugly legs and don't want to show them off (!), or I don't understand shorts at 60 degrees. Brrr.

But absolutely - plan on layering. A fleece jacket (different from an old style sweatshirt) works well - lightweight and easy to pack, dries quickly if wet. Shoes, not flip flops.

unless you go on vacation in the summer somewhere warm like Hawaii or the East Coast. I thought 65 is warm enough, but when I come back from warm places, I already feel freezing at the airport in the middle of the summer. After a few days, you get used to it.

I rarely wear shorts here. I wear a lot of REI stuff so, usually in the summer I wear the lightweight pants that could (but are never) rolled up into shorts. I usually pair it with a short sleeve shirt and almost always have a form fitting fleece pullover on over it, or wrapped around my waist. Middle of the day I don't need it, but as soon as the sun goes down, I wear long sleeves.

I wear shorts from basically May to October. I'm a native and of Northern European descent, so I run hot and rarely feel cold.

This summer was HOT, and by that I mean that it had real humidity and the nights stayed warm (60 degrees plus). Now that we're in September, it's still getting quite warm in the daytime, but nights cool off VERY quickly.

From Miami? T-shirt, a long-sleeve t-shirt, a fleece jacket, a pair of shorts, pair of pants, and maybe a hat. The weather here is quite manageable until about mid-October. After that, you'd better be prepared for everything but heat.

Me too, I take advantage of the warm weather to be more comfortable and consider 55 warm. This morning it was a bit breezy and 52 when I left for work but still wore no jacket and was fine. We rarely get frost until after Halloween. I still chuckle this time of year when I walk through Pike Place Market and see well-tanned tourists wearing jackets on a day like today when it's 75.

I moved up here from Hawai'i, where I considered 70-75 to be sweatshirt weather. I was definitely cold this past winter (I didn't adjust as quickly as my kids did). This spring, when it hit the 60s, it felt warm to me, so maybe I'm finally adjusting. 60s would put us into a cold weather coma in Kona

I generally wear pants, almost never shorts, and will wear a tshirt/short sleeves and having longer sleeves/light jacket with me at almost all times. Usually the day starts out chilly and I'm wearing the jacket, then by the latter part of work, it's warmed up and I leave the jacket in the bag. I believe in layers. Coming straight from Miami, you might want to add an extra jacket layer to start your day. So short sleeves, long sleeves, jacket
