thinking of doing the same, my research thus far indicates Hilo as pretty affordable and good quality of life check out the thread I have, I actually posted links to a bunch of rentals I found in Hilo
Moving to Hawaii in a couple of weeks for a year with my better half and four year old-any recommendations on schools and areas to live ?
Pretty late to be deciding on all this. A few weeks isn't much time to get things into place.
Most 4 year olds aren't in school. Pre-K program?
Which island? Budget? Are you bringing a car? There are a lot more questions you need to answer before anyone can even begin to give you advice you can use.
I'll be working in downtown Honolulu so would prefer somewhere walking distance. Pre-K program yes. As my term is 6months-1year, probably pick up a car second hand or even rent/lease one. Not sure how much places go for, but budget is probably $2-3k per month..
If you will be living on Oahu and working in downtown, a car isn't really necessary. With a four year old, school isn't as important as being close to work since his/her school would be preschool anyway.
How about the Kakaako or Ala Moana area? Your commute to work would be easy, there's loads of shops and such in the area, easy to get to the main bus terminal at Ala Moana shopping center and the beach is close by, too.
Auwe 1Asian! That's a very young attitude which should only appear in unattached tourist youths on spring break. Hawaii is for ohana! HarryShah seems a very respectable person, one shouldn't make comments like that around respectable people, it is embarassing.
In addition to serviced furnished apartments also looking for pre-k recommendations.
