A student visiting Honolulu brought back a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts as a gift. I was expecting a run-of-the-mill chocolate covered candy. They are the best chocolates I have ever had! Even the Swiss can't make'em that good. On another occasion, Costco put out some samples, and people were going back for seconds and thirds (me too).

Just wondered if they were that popular in Hawaii, and why aren't they made more available?

Well, they are available at all the stores I shop at. You mean like sold at mainland stores?

If you want really good chocolate, there is some locally grown on the island. I always like that over dry roasted coffee beans, myself. Not only a serious Yumm! but a great eye opener, too. Kinda like breakfast candy since if you had it at night you wouldn't sleep for hours.

I can't agree. The chocolate is waxy and poor quality. Yuck!

LOL...When I was a child growing up in Hawaii, I would always would buy a Hawaiian Host Chocolate candy bar instead of a Hershey's or a Nestle's Chocolate Crunch bar.

Now that I'm an adult and have had the opportunity to taste and buy German, Swiss and Belgium Chocolate, I have to say that for me European Chocolate is the best!

American chocolate manufacturers use less of the quality ingredients than the Europeans do, and add more emulsifiers and sugar instead.

My neighbor makes some really good chocolate. She doesn't make very much of it though since she only has one cacao tree. They have big yellow pods on them which have the cocoa beans in them and it takes about as much processing to make chocolate as it does to make coffee.

I'm not sure where the big mac nut factories get their chocolate from, I'm sure it's not Hawaiian chocolate. There is a small candy company around here somewhere who makes their own chocolate from scratch, but I'm not sure of their name or location. Apparently, they will buy the cacao pods and they are the only folks around here who will buy them - should you happen to be a cacoa grower.

Hawaiian Host is crap. I always wondered why they ruined expensive mac nuts with bad, oversweetened chocolate.

I adore Hawaiian Host chocolate covered macadamia nuts, but I have to say that as far as the chocolate is concerned, French chocolate tops everyone else!

My dad grew cocoa in Trinidad, on 500 acres of rainforest. Why isn't more cocoa grown in Hawaii? Grow it organic and slap a Hawaii label on the products, and they will sell like hotcakes at Whole Foods and stores like that.
