Hospital workers on the Big Island are losing their jobs, and it’s the first wave of cuts that could hit almost every island.
The changes will affect Hilo Medical Center, Kau Hospital and Hale Hoola Hamakua.
State-owned hospitals in East Hawaii will lay off 87 employees, approximately seven percent of the total workforce, and cut back services in response to a projected $7 million shortfall.
The Big Island facilities fall under the state-funded hospital system, Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. Corporate CEO Linda Rosen said this is the first regional cut to be announced. Maui, Kauai and Oahu will also announce cuts next week.

The medical news just goes from bad to worse!

I don't think HHSC (the state run system) has a hospital on Oahu except for a nursing home facility so it won't really be noticed here (since we have Queen's, Castle, Straub, etc) - but, those with medical conditions on the outer islands or thinking about the outer islands to move to should take notice.

Leahi and Maluhia on Oahu. Both Long term care facilities. No acute care from HHSC on Oahu. HHSC is basically the safety net system. Viper is right about taking notice if the State does not fund them better.

Every time I get the hankering to move my medical practice to Hawaii, something like this happens.
Must be a sign.

Yes. I agree. Makes you wander sometimes?
Best of luck, if you decide to move your medical practice to Hawaii.

A lot of our doctor's leave for the mainland. I needed a liver specialist and there were 2.... on OAHU.

My first GP moved to the mainland, and he was a local boy. Private practice is very hard here from what my doctors say.

Where would you expect them to be located?

My point is there were ONLY 2 on the main island. I was told there was a shortage. Do you know how long that makes the wait for important stuff?

I count 30 Gastroenterologist's on Oahu - that seems like a decent number to me.

GI guys aren't necessarily liver specialists.

Our GI guys (at a major hospital here) send the complicated liver stuff to another hospital where these super-liver-specialty dudes work.

There's regular liver stuff and there's liver specialists.
