Any advice on cold sores? Home remedies? I also know there is a prescription cream available...any luck with any of these?

On a Dr Oz show, he recommended mashing up a few antacids with a few drops of water to form a paste. Apply to your canker sore with a q-tip, and apply some pressure. The antacids help neutralize acids, which encourages the healing of the cold sore.

I don't know if it works, but maybe worth a try.

I get them when I eat too many peanuts and other nuts. I dab a little peroxide on them when they are really bothersome and I think it helps them heal faster. Beware of the taste, its not terribly pleasant.

Do some research on "Zapper".
Regualr use could keep those nasties at bay indefinitely!

It will also kill the bad bacteria in your mouth so that you never have bad breath.

Campho-phenique is the old standard for cold sores. Also keep it from drying out and crusting over - if it breaks open, you could get a secondary infection, which can be a whole lot of trouble.

Also - to whoever recommended Zapper - are you talking about the thing that kills parasites? Cold sores aren't caused by parasites. They're a form of herpes and they're contagious.

Go to the doctor and get a prescription (Acyclovir, Valtrex) for when you get an outbreak. It will help to prevent outbreaks, speed healing time and prevent transmission to other parts of your body as well as other individuals.

There is a OTC paste that is quite effective. Zylactin.

Thanks for the responses. What's the name of the prescription cream that doctors prescribe called? Has anyone used it?

There are prescription topical creams and there are pills. Everything depends on the severity of symptoms and outbreaks. The pills are the best solution if you want to prevent outbreaks, the cream if you want to treat outbreaks.

For what it's worth, if you are looking into prescriptions, you really should be consulting with a doctor rather than an online forum.

My daughter had a great result using Abreva, which you can get over the counter. It's expensive, but it cleared her cold sore up in a day and usually they last a week.
