Hi guys,

I felt the pain in knee on Sunday evening. I really am unsure how the injury has occurred. The only exercise I had done was running/sprinting, but that was a few days before the injury. I just happend to get up off the bed as I was laying down and then as I put pressure on the leg I felt a sudden pain which caused some immobility and wasn't allowing me to put a lot of pressure on the leg. The next day it was a tiny bit better but still felt the pain.

I used some pain gel on the knee and this helped a lot as the pain was pretty much gone and I could walk around pain free pretty much. Since then the pain has definitely reduced, but it's obvious the pain is still there and occasionally when I bend the knee and straighten there will be some pain which doesn't allow me to straighten fully. However, this is occasional and for the most part I can straighten my leg with very little pain.

Yesterday I decided to perform some squats and a couple of leg exercises as I haven't exercised at all for over a week. I don't know exactly what the pain could be as I can still put weight on it and walk around okay, albeit a little bit gingerly as to be mindful of not worsening the injury. I was thinking of going to visit the doctor if it doesn't clear up by at least Monday or Tuesday. Do you think it could it just be a pull or spain? I haven't been taking any pain killers, but should I be?

Squats are some of the worse things one can do to the knees. A friend talks about doing squats and weights are the reasons he's ended up with knee and shoulder replacements so far...one of each and talks about the other shoulder.

I'd rest the knee and slow down on the aggressive push for exercises. Mild work when the knee feels better.

We are such a society TODAY of pushing the body and it eventually starts to let us know.

As far as going to the doctor, sure go ahead they are very well known for drugs and surgery. I'm 79 soon and did many yrs of gym work and dancing and boy do I have an arthritic body.

Ice and rest the knee. Take an otc pain med if it's very painful.

When I first went to a doctor for my OA knee I was 57 and he said welcome to the arthritis world. I still went on to exercise, mildly into my 60's and wore knee supports.

Thanks jaminhealth for the advice.

Yeah, I've been a little overweight, but not a lot. By running and sprinting I was just trying to get my weight down, but sometimes I don't know when to rest for my own good. I am nearing 30 too, so I know my body will go downhill from here on out lol.

79 y/o, nice! Do you still keep in shape and exercise regular or not so much? I see you live in California, I'm envious - you must be able to get out and about in the year round sunshine and feel good. I live in UK and the weather is hit and miss at the moment, some days I don't feel like getting out to exercise haha.

Since my knee has worsened and I ended up with enough complications from hip replacement in 2010, no I don't go exercising a lot anymore. I cannot. I still stretch and have learned a lot of physical therapy for strengthening the knee.

Push away from the table, forget those scones. Eat as much greens and good protein and cut out the starchy stuff.

WALK, good brisk walking.

Probably the best thing you can do for yourself is ease up on the squats, just do some waling and try to lose some of that weight, but it sure doesn't sound like you have any serious injury, but remember we are all just lay people here, only a doctor can make an educated diagnoses. Some people want to play doctor to everyone who posts here.

Yep, far better to take the "advice" of an anonymous internet poster who thinks "exercise causes arthritis"

Being overweight is far more detrimental to the health of your knees than exercise...

Plenty of people here can "guess" what might be wrong with your knee but no one can actually "tell you whats wrong" unless they actually see AND actually know what they are doing...IE Doctor

If your knee doesn't respond to rest you should absolutely have it looked at....

If symptoms improve NOTHING WRONG with running, walking, weight training and even SQUATS

Its a myth that squats are bad for the knees if done correctly more helpful than harmful

"Although many of us have heard that squats harm knees, the exercise is actually “quite good for the knees, if you do the squats correctly"
