When I was diagnosed 3 years ago I had for many years ignored the symptoms first asked about it when I was 28 years old when I had my wisdom teeth removed. The oral surgeon said when I was under he noticed I had symptoms of sleep apnea.

I was not diagnosed and put on CPAP until I was in my late 40's. I would wake up with racing heart rate because of lack of oxygen. When I had a sleep study they recorded O2 saturation's as low as 70% which I was told I could have a stroke, or cardiac arrest.

Normally you wake up and start breathing again, but someone sick with Covid-19, and taking over the counter cold medicine might not be able to wake up to recover from loss of oxygen.

Obesity is a risk factor for apnea, and I just heard an epidemiologist (I think thats what she is) on the tube saying that obesity is likely contributing to younger people dying from Covid-19 in the US,

Actually Sleep Apnea isn't associated with just obesity in reality. Many have thought that. Sure, if you're obese you are perhaps more likely to be affected, but I've known many younger and thinner people that have it as well.......worst of them "Central Sleep Apnea" which isn't even associated with an enlarged throat area causing the problem, it's their brain not sending the right signals.

Actually it is associated with obesity in reality. That doesn't mean non-obese people can't have it.

Yeah, I'm pretty thin and I have it. I don't want a CPAP, I'm young (ish) and that is just too...

I've trained myself not to sleep on my back, as long as I do that I'm fine. If you find that you flip over try tying a tennis ball to your back or sewing it into a tshirt.

If you have it I would suggest buying a cheap pulse oxgen meter that records the readings. I have one from Amazon it was about $30-40. Tape it on your finger and sleep overnight verify your o2 levels are not dropping below 90. They have a micro usb plug it into your PC and pull the data.

When I was first diagnosed I could not fall asleep with cpap on so I dropped about 40 lbs my BMI was about 30 hoping I could avoid the cpap. They sent me home with a pulse oxygen meter showed me I dipped as low as 72% while sleeping even after weight loss.

A few guys over on CpapTalk forum said they dropped into the mid 60% range Oxygen sats. This is what killed Carrie Fisher she had used lot illegal drugs the day before fell asleep on an airplane with un-treated sleep apnea. At the higher cabin altitude around 8000 feet air is thinner since she was slightly drugged fell sleep normally we wake up when O2 sats get too low. Under the drugs, and thinner air she didn't wake up like usual. My guess she was able to get away with it on the ground at near sea level she probably had been for years.

That's a good idea. I'm pretty sure I'm fine, cause DH says I do the whole gasping thing if I'm on my back, and not on my side.

Also, I have nightmares on my back about suffocating (cause I am ) but that never happens on my side.

I do have an oxygen meter thingy, I'll check it out.
