I think you're right. Some scratches that result in scabbing will leave a light scar, but the scar usually vanishes in time. Deeper wounds can leave more significant scars that can last longer, or even for life.

Scabs will fall off on their own when the healing process is finished. They get crusty and start to crack. I suppose it's no big deal to help remove it at that point. But if the scab is still attached, it can hurt to pick them off and it can interfere in the healing process. I would think taking a scab off too early would just make the healing process that much longer, or possible leave a scar that lasts much longer. The purpose of scabbing seems to be to help protect the wound from infection, like a natural Band-Aid.

Yeah,I know that scabs are a part of the healing process, but it is tempting to just pick them. Well,in my case they are.

When scabs have pretty much done their job, it's not unusual to want to help tidy up the spot a bit faster. Although scabs are natural, they might look like a somewhat unsightly blemish, get snagged on clothing, or even itch a bit, thus three more reasons why a person might not want them lingering around any longer than necessary.

As you suspected, picking at scabs too early runs the risk of interferring with the healing process and could have the potential of causing more noticable scars to form and last much longer. It depends on the severity of the wound. However, even though scabs are perfectly normal, they can seem like foreign objects you'd like to get rid of, kind of like nose nuggets, ear wax, and eye crud. The latter things are also normal, but commonly need to be dislodged or removed with assistance. Scabs, on the other hand, will eventually drop off on their own.

Seeing a scab and immediately think, "Ah-ha! A scab! Gotta pick it," or having an urge to pick someone else's scab for the same reason, might be more of a compulsive urge than an ordinary one. It might even be somewhat of a fetish for some people. A lot of it may simply be from habit, similar to nose picking. "You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose."
