My doc put me on a trial med for what he thinks is acid reflux. It worked great. I went to fill the script and the pharmacy said my insurance won't pay for that particular med and mandated I take Nexium. I've taken it for nearly 2 months and the AR is back big time. The pain in my chest and back, and even goes down my arms, is wicked bad.
So, since my insurance company must know way more than the doctor that saw me personally, is there anything else I can do to help prevent heartburn? Sadly at this point, even oatmeal gives me heartburn. I've literally not found anything at all that doesn't send me into what feels like a 'death spiral'.

Have you called & talked with your insurance company? I've gotten them to approve a med for my DH that wasn't on the list. It will take some paperwork and documentation from your doctor. All starts with a phone call from you. Good luck!

Didn't know I could. Figured they were the medical 'Gods' and you couldn't argue with them. I'll call them in the morning. Thank you!

I'll start with honey. I'm not a big cinnamon fan! Thanks. And that's something I have in the office. I hope it works.

I've taken them all and Prevacid is just as good as Nexium and is now available over the counter..Go get you some and forget the high cost of Nexium prescribed by your Dr...Also, I wouldn't try cinnamon as that's a huge culprit in heartburn; it kills me...I've had AR for 7 years and I know what you're going through. I can't even drink a soda anymore without it burning...And, I choke all the time...
Usually if your doctor writes a note to the insurance company and uses the words "medically necessary" they will cover the med. I had to do it a couple of times.
I live with reflux. I will share some of the things that help me.
Avoid caffeine
Eat something every 4 hours
Identify your food triggers and avoid them. Mine include anything red, onions, garlic, eggs, fruit juices, and chocolate (the reason I live with reflux, who can live without chocolate?).
Stress is a major contributor. Do your best to avoid it.
Drink lots of water.
I tried all of the meds. What works best for me is to take 2 Pepcid tablets at a time. Sometimes, especially this time of year when both stress and food abound, I will take the Pepcid even before I eat if I know that something is going to hurt me. I have tried the chewables but they don't work as well for me. I use the Wal Mart version of the tablets and they work just fine.
