American people mostly share the same culture, language, mentality and values. This makes "American" an ethnicity in my opinion. So, what kind of ethnicity American is? Germanic, Celtic, Slavic, Mediterranean, etc?

If American is it's own unique ethnicity then it can't be some other type of ethnicity like Germanic, Celtic, etc.

What would it be? I mean, Russian ethnicity is a Slavic ethnicity, German ethnicity is a Germanic ethnicity, Polish ethnicity is a Slavic ethnicity, etc.

Too soon IMO for a common across-the-board American ethnic culture at only 400+ years old.
But I'll bet other countries can spot an American before they open their mouths, by their clothes, their behavior and other distinguishing features. I doubt skin color is a big factor in identifying the "Americano."

We Americans have many good qualities and probably some annoying traits. But we are definitely American in our culture.
Ethnic? Maybe in another 200 years when more edges have been rubbed smoother.

We're a melting pot remember. Take your pick of ethnicity.

We aren't a melting pot. We're a salad. And not all the ingredients wanted to be here, but they were carried here on slave ships, and some really really want to be here and mix into the population and workforce despite laws against them being here.

America is a distinct culture. Is that the same as an ethnicity? I don't know, you tell me. Does it really matter?
