Icy tea had a good idea---bird-watching is a very inexpensive hobby. You can get a very serviceable pair of binoculars for less than $50, and the National Geographic field guide, for around $15, will tell you everything you need to know to identify the birds. Once you have made those two investments, you can entertain yourself for free for the rest of your life, and never run out of new birds to look for. There are 800 species in North America, and if you identify 100 in your first year, you'll be doing really well. Every new one you see is free.
