All Minnesotans talk about is High School? Coming from the guy whose argument was citing the state with the most D1 schools, not even the state with the most D1 players! (http://sportdesigns.com/chinc/links/...edia%20Kit.pdf) And Minnesotans probably talk about the best high school hockey in the country because they're sick of talking about everything else that Minnesota is better at than ANY OTHER STATE when it comes to hockey, it's straight up irrational and embarrassing to claim that there's a better hockey state than Minnesota. Massachusetts has the best pro sports in America, can't you just accept that as enough? You don't have to be the best at everything. And look at the populations, other than your most D1 schools in a certain location which means nothing you have zero argument. http://3.cdn.nhle.com/wild/images/up...phicFINAL2.jpg Your 17 NHL players are pretty close to our 48 not considering population though...well done

Wow. I've spent an enormous amount of time in Princeton over the years and had no clue that Princeton Day School was one of the top 50 hockey schools in the country.

I believe this year is the first since '02/'03 that Minnesota does not have the most NHLers as Michigan appears to have taken over that spot from The State of Hockey 37 to 36.

NHL Totals by Birth State, 2013‑14*Stats

rounding out the top 8 states for current NHL players...
28) New York
14) Mass
10) Connecticut
9) Wisconsin
9) Pennsylvania
8) Illinois

In Division I Hockey (2012-2013), the top 7 are...
182) Minnesota
131) Michigan
103) Massachusetts
86) New York
69) Pennsylvania
66) Illiniois
59) California (biggest gain (39) since '02 - '03)

you have a point as even though Carlson and Palmeri were born in MA & NY, they appear to have played in the New Jersey prep leagues.

The way you're talking about HS hockey here it's clear you have no idea how much a part of the culture hockey is.

Our state tournament is the biggest high school tournament - for ANY sport - in the entire nation. Bigger than basketball in Ohio or New York, or football in Texas or California.

It's so big that America's coach, Herb Brooks, said his best memory in the sport wasn't his national championships with the Gophers or even his Gold Medal in '80, but his state championship with his (and my) JHS Govs in '55.

Trust me dude, if you think HS hockey isn't worthy of the pride we have in it here, you haven't the slightest idea about hockey in MN.

But I will agree that you can't compare MN to any other state in the country when it comes to our kids. It's just so much more of a way of life here than any other state, including all our surrounding states or even Michigan.

What about the number of quality players? I am curious to see if the numbers can be further broken down into # of quality players (probably need some kind of arbitrary definition) per state/province/country.

such as members of the US Hockey Hall of Fame?

the list after 2008 looked like this...

(place of birth/high school or prep)

Minnesota 48/52
Massachusetts 35/37
Michigan 13/13
New York 5/7
New Hampshire 3/6
North Dakota 3/1
Rhode Island 2/2
Pennsylvania 2/1
Connecticut 2/1
Wisconsin 1/2
Illinois 1/2
New Jersey 1/1
Texas 1/0
California 1/0
Oklahoma 1/0
Washington DC 1/0
Missouri 1/0
Colorado 0/1

since then, the list has grown by 23 players and a quick look would indicate a bit of tightening up between the top 3 states but Minnesota still holds a clear edge....
