Due to a low appraisal on our new construction, we are down-grading our granite counter-tops to laminate. I know I will go with something neutral to go with khaki colored walls in the kitchen. Our cabinets are going to be medium Oak with natural Ash wood flooring. If we would have done granite counter-tops, we were going to do black appliances. However, now that we are going with laminate. I am thinking I should go with white instead. The kitchen dining area is open concept 26 x 13. The kitchen is a U-shape with 4 ft island. Our thought for black with granite was that it makes for a more subtle and sheek look, and somewhat hides the appliances more so than white. However, concerned that black with be too dark with medium Oak cabinets. White looks cleaner and brighter.

Thoughts/preferences???

as long as said appliances work, get the job done and are safe to use--go with whatever you can afford.

A picture would help, but I tend to like lighter colors in a kitchen, so I'd choose white.

I've had white, black and stainless appliances - I love stainless. I feel it gives some kitchens a modern clean edge that I really like...depends on the kitchen of course. With oak cabinets I'd probably go white although I think of white and oak as being a dated look (but of course that is just my taste).

Personally I think white appliances look out of place in a kitchen that has all warm colors. If you don't think black will work, go with an almond appliance and you will be happier. It's tough to mix warm tones with cold tones and have it look right I think.

Also, have you looked into the newer high-def laminates. They are basically pictures of granite made into laminate. They are very realistic looking and you can probably find something similar to your granite choice and keep the black if that is what you really want.

I agree. My older kitchen has rich yellowish oak cabinets and until I looked at my budget...it would have looked a lot better with black appliances. Since I couldn't new appliances, I painted the kitchen dark blue/navy. It looks great with the yellowish hue of the old oak...but black would have looked awesome. Black and warm/honeyed woods are a great combo, I think.

Appliance manufacturers stopped making almond appliances in 2000, they replaces it with bisque, which is also going to be phased and replaced out in a year or two.
Bisque looks awful with any hue of oak.

As long as the black appliances have something else to relate to in the kitchen, such as mottling/coloration in the floor or counter, they can look beautiful!
