I like carpet in bedrooms. My wife hates it anywhere and everywhere.
So, 90% of our carpet has been eliminated and the rest is going away next month.
Our house
Kitchen and dining room has tile front entry is tile bathrooms tile. The rest is carpet. We don't bring shoes in the house so the carpet stays clean. I usually have my buddy come in and clean it once a year. I don't mind carpet I just prefer hardwood floors.
I have a dilemma. I am prepping up a house that was vandalized by previous tenants and basically I will entirely redo the kitchen, bathroom and all the floors.
Upstairs, in all 3 bedrooms my contractor tore the carpet and underneath lies beautiful hardwood floor that can be easily sanded.
Now, I believed that hard wood floors are in. My realtor said no, put carpet. People want carpet upstairs in the bedrooms.
What is your opinion? The realtor has 30 years of experience in the area I live in. However she gave me what I perceive conflicting advice, or so it seems to me.

I'm a carpet girl. Carpets are more comfortable and homey. I am a "floor person" and I find wood/tile floors very cold and hard and unpleasant.
Hardwood all the way. Carpet is definitely "out" these days. I wouldn't even look at homes that had wall to wall carpet unless there was a HWF underneath. I can't stand the "half and half" of carpet in one part of the house and HWF in another. People can always get a nice area rug.
Carpets are difficult to deal with if you have pets or kids with allergies.
Wow, I am torn, to be honest. I grew up in a house with hardwood floors and hand made wool, expensive carpets, we cleaned once a year. IMO they are so much easier to clean, but since this is a house I want to sell i don;t really care.
Yes carpet can last long if people dont take their shoes out at the door. But hardwood floors (original from the 50s) sanded and coated with a nice stain are easily maintained if we put pads on furniture. The rest is a breathe, really. Pet hair wont stick to them as they do with carpet. Hardwood floors are not cold. Carpet - think hand made Turkish carpet, bought in bazar in Istanbul or just a regular Macy's carpet - covering most of the rooms are definitely a notch over the regular carpet. Tiles are cold. But this isn;t Europe I grew up in; this is America. I'll do whatever the market says. Maybe I shall ask another realtor in the area?
No! You can make this decision yourself. If you really want to know, start a thread asking PITTSBURGHERS what they prefer. I don't see why you're torn. If someone wants carpet, they can install it over the hardwood. Usually people don't want the carpet that is already in the house because it's not the color they want. Hardwood covers all preferences because it provides finished hardwood floors to people who want them, the option to put in quality area rugs, or the option to install wall to wall. If you put wall to wall in, you're eliminating two other preferences. The people who want hardwood will want that hardwood that's under the carpet to be in good condition. Whatever you do, don't waste your money on expensive wall to wall because people aren't gong to appreciate it and they'll likely replace it anyway.
It is usually easier to rent with carpet. And personally, I don't like hard floors because I have knee and hip problems. Hardwood and tile just makes it worse. And the story about carpet making allergies worse, is just not true.
