We did a couple of 12' x 12' decks here a few years back for $350 in materials each, but I used 16" OC, chose the size to maximize lumber usage, and only used preformed footers. NO labor costs.

The price you have been given is low enough to be suspect. If you call a lumberyard, you may be able to get a good estimate on actual costs of lumber site-delivered. Somewhere around 2.5 or 3 times that price would be a sweet spot IF your soil was good, permitting was friendly, and there were no gotchas.

My GUESS is the $2500 was a lowball offer due to circumstances or the expectation of jacking you off later.

I'm in the same boat. I have two 30 year old decks that are falling apart. One is 15' x 6' and the other is 8' x 10'. I was given an unofficial quote of $10,000 for both decks, which seems pretty high. My decks are about 4' off the ground. I have no problems ripping down the old deck but I'd rather pay someone to put it up in a week. I'm sure I could do it, but I would have to buy $500 worth of tools and would take me at least a month or two.

Please post back any quotes you get.

Obviously you can't base a project on one quote. And at $59.00sq/ft. that ludacris. Do your homework- quotes from Chicago won't do you much good in CO.- get three quotes from legitimate deck builders in your area, then make an educated decision based on the information at-hand.

Got off the phone with the first company and these are the early ball park quotes I got:

$8900 for treated lumber
$10,500 for cedar wood
$16,500 for composite T (trex transcend)

This is for tear down of current deck and install of new one.

Don't know much about composite decking.
Anyone know if this is a good product?

Going to call 2-3 more companies for more quotes.

No way (or maybe I should clarify- my quote wouldn't be that). Or they're really, really, desperate for work.

$20 per square foot plus $250 per footer, plus railings, plus lighting, plus permits.

Dunno. Didn't sound like there were desperate for work.
When we trying to set up for them to come out, they were booked for the week... but who knows...

Just called a 2nd company and they quoted me about $9000 for tear down and build of new deck.

Since you haven't decided on the actual size- I figured 400sq/ft @ $27.50 (that's because of the hgt)= $11k (that's basically throwing in the teardown- a chainsaw and sledge hammer make short work of that; unless there's an extremely long haul to the roll-off container).
But, and there's always a BUT, There's still stairs if you want them (about $85-90 per step/handrail, straight run with a concrete landing pad [code]), new footings (there's no way a inspector is going to let me build on top of the existing. Cost? depends how many and how deep), permits, disposal fees, and while it's clean, new, and empty- stain/sealer.

Like Wilson said- Plus, Plus, Plus...

You're right... sorry for any confusion...I had mentioned of probably going to 400sq/ft...

No, the prices quoted so far are if we were to keep the same size deck.
Once I meet with them and finalize the size/shape we want, I'll post back the final cost.

On a side note, is there a difference between treated lumber and cedar wood?
Is one better than the other?
From what I've read, I'm reading more pro for treated lumber over cedar.
