I've had several smoke alarms that chirped like they needed new batteries, but replacing the batteries did nothing. I ended up replacing the detectors, which solved the problems. I have started using 10-year lithium batteries in some of my detectors - especially those that are harder to reach.
If when you say, "Our house fire alarms are hooked up to a central station" you mean you have a burglar/fire alarm, it may be that the alarm panel itself needs a new battery.
Yes, the alarms can be hooked to a central "station" but they usually do have batteries.
If you just bought the place, it would be wise to go around and replace all the batteries, so now you know they are all fresh.
