I have a bad smell - odor under my kitchen sink. I have a garbage disposal. with a drain from the dishwasher There are no water leaks. The sink drains do not smell. It has vent under the sink that is not connected to a pipe going to the roof. The sink its installed in an island counter therefore the under the sink vent. Could it be the vent, do they fail over time, or plug, etc?. Any suggestions?

Yes, Studor Vents can fail- better known as AAV (air admittance valve).

But, clarify the odor. Is it a sewer gas smell or does the odor have a more petroleum smell?

Sewer gas smell would be a good indicator of a failed AAV. A petro smell could be the sound-deadening pads attached to the bottom side of the sink- this was a major problem several years ago. A lot of manufacturers are using different materials today- but there may still be some out there that still use the older smelly types- and some can linger for quite awhile.
