I was looking for specific work for my home and this company advertised on CL as well as with an updated website/facebook page. The advertising is attractive and some people were on the site seeking estimates. I called the number but hung up when it went to voicemail and there was no mention of the company's name, I thought I might have misdialed but it prompted me to research.
I searched the company again online and found a site that had the owners name, searched that, and found some terrifying things. He recently assaulted a woman and held her at gunpoint. Yet he is still free and working with customers? This is not the first time he was violent but he was only given probation the last time. Now, he is out on bail I guess. Some of the customers seeking estimates on the site had women's names. If I had done the same I would have been none the wiser.
Just a reminder to be careful, you just never know.
I wouldn't let a worker set foot on my property unless he was licensed and bonded. This doesn't preclude someone from being a bad guy, but it cuts down the odds.

So craigslist and facebook are free and I could set one up in 20 minutes. And many websites are free too. Basically, not legitimate sources of advertising.
Want a legitimate contractor? Look in the yellow pages, yes the printed book.

Basically...... I'm not surprised.........
Yellow pages?? I haven't seen one for at least 5 years.
I also want to add there is a place called yelp and it allows people to post comments about how the persons work is /was . You can comment on just about anything there that this person did or does . It is rather a relief to know that there is still a place where people can tell the truth about workmanship when having work done at your home and it also good for posting about poor service anywhere really .
Yes. great reminder.
Fortunately so far I've been able to hire contractors and repairmen by local reputations, length in the community, and recommendations from friends only.
You can look for legitimate contractors through your local home builders association. Another good way to find reputable contractors is by going to your local lumber store and asking for recommendations. Good contractors that have built a reputation do not advertise on craigslist or any of the other websites including angies list. They don't have to because they stay busy by word of mouth.
This has nothing to do with reliability or workmanship. The guy has fancy equipment and no bad reviews. It's just he is a violent criminal out on bail who held someone at gunpoint. And he gets to run his business as usual, which may very well provide good service. There's just that other thing...
