I vote neither. We did not put in a fireplace when we designed our home, and much prefer it that way.

Someone asked about cleanup with a wood fireplace. Don't forget to have your chimney inspected and swept periodically, or you'll be in danger of a chimney fire (broken link) from creosote buildup. A chimney fire can take out your entire house, and quickly.

But I don't burn continuously, just now and then.

I got tired of the full-time cold draft. Because of the gas logs, by code, the damper had to be blocked open.
I took out the gas logs, and like that I can close the damper when not burning a fire.
Gas logs are different that a gas insert. Our insert is sealed, so it takes in outside air for combustion and exhausts smoke out a seperate pipe. It uses no inside room air, it is sealed from the room, so it's impossibe to have a cold draft, or emissions back into the room..
Gas logs are for looks only, and do not heat the room. An insert will heat your home. Ours puts out 40,000 btu's and uses two blowers to blast heat into the room. Far more efficient that a gas log, or wood burning unit...

I only answered the OP's question accurately and obviously subjectively.
I have a high efficiency dual fuel heating system, a heat pump with gas furnace back up.
The fireplace is for atmosphere and entertainment only at my home.
Gas logs or inserts cannot compete with crackling wood in that area. IMO as requested.
