I dont post enough on here... but im going to start posting more.
My question is...
I have a AC guy coming out tommarow to put a new condenser and everything new and gutted out in the attic BUT NOT my duct work... Im getting a 3 1/2 ton unit Payne 13 seer system put in for $4,000 cash. my home is 2,000 sq ft. the unit up there is old and not energy effiecent. as Ive been getting $500 electric bills. is the payne system a good buy? someone please let me know. Thank you, I'll will def be on here more guys.
Payne is the "generic/commercial" line of Carrier.
I had one installed in a rental house and have been VERY happy with it.
By the way, I paid nowhere near $4,000. Mine was a 2-1/2 ton unit in a slightly smaller house - and it only cost $2,300 (tax included). I suppose the price difference could reflect the fact that mine is not in the attic, but I'd still suggest getting more quotes.
I got several quotes, and some where $6100 and $5500, I thought it was a good deal, includes thermostat, unit inside and out and new coil, disconnect whip and everything he said he'd install it 6-8 hours.... anyone else know about paynes? thanks alot guys.

Wow, those are some pricey quotes. We just (last week) put in a 3 ton, 13 SEER Carrier, new lines, new cut-off, inside and outside work, moved the location around the corner of the house, etc. $2600 They were here around 9 and done by 12:30. Only thing we didn't change was the thermostat (we had a nice, programmable one). But, like the other poster, ours was in an accessible garage, not the attic.

The fact you say "cash" leads me to a question. Will you have a receipt and written warranty???

Yes he's writing me a receipt. and I had a 3 ton and he said that he would reccomend getting bigger because it didnt cool my house off so good. anyway I thought intially that it was a good price. others were wating 5-6K
Don't just go by price. Remember you will need to call someone to fix it someday and you want to do it all right the first time. Make sure you get the contractor to put everything they will do in the price. Also if he didn't check the duct work how does he know the new system will work with the old duct work? Most of the time the duct work is too small for the first system and then a contractor will go install an even bigger system and shabam... it's still too small but now it's effectively even smaller than it was before.
The first thing I would do before spending money for a new system would be to make sure the old systems coils were clean and you weren't using a pleated filter.
My system was made in 87' and he said it was a 8 seer. and this new system is a 13 seer? he said it would cut my electric use by 30% and save on my electric bill.... true?
A good HVAC contractor is going to check out the house to determine what size is really needed. That means checking out how much insulation is in the attic, what kind of windows, etc. 3 1/2 ton for a 2000 SF house is a little large unless you are in a very very hot climate.
If you install too large of a unit, it will not run long enough to dehumidify the house. It will go on and off frequently, and that can wear out the compressor before its time. The price sounds a little high too, but I don't know where you are, so the rates may be higher there.
