I hear that. America should be tackling social security, healthcare costs, the tax system, military budget, etc. but none of our leaders seem to have the political balls to do anything about it.

Huh? Illegals certainly have access to education, medical aid, and other state benefits.

MIT has over 2,000 courses available for free online -- you don't need a scholarship or excessive debt to get a world class education.

That's not the point though -- you don't have to go to college to be successful, but you do have to be willing to put in your hours and work hard. There are a countless number of jobs that can easily support a family that don't require college, but too many people are put off by the work required to master a trade or vocation. The just want to go punch in and out of the factory where they tighten screw #5 for eight hours a day.

If they spent half as much time learning a skill (plumbing, mechanic, landscaping, electrical work, computer repair, cooking / baking, foreign language, etc, etc) as they did complaining about how their job was shipped over seas they could easily be pulling $50k a year.

Overall, I have to agree with texascrude. If you are a person who will show up to work on time, attend regularly, work hard, and get along with others, you will almost always find a place to work. Over time you will have advancement opportunities. Why? Because so few people are willing to do just this.

I used to be sympathetic to the people we are discussing, until I had an eye-opening experience. I worked at a software company in New York city. We had a payment processing function that was very important to the success of the company. It was boring, monotonous work but if mistakes were made we could lose clients.

We set up a payment processing unit in New Jersey, across the GW bridge, in 2002. We paid great money and only required a GED ($15/hr to start vs. $5.25 minimum wage, could move to $17/hr after a few months) plus amazing perks: free catered lunch, transportation home after work, full health insurance, FSA, 401k with match, college tuition reimbursement, $200 monthly bonus if there were no errors, 28 days paid leave per year, $2K annual bonus, and other benefits. The work was boring but people could listen to music on their headphones if they wished.

I was amazed by how many problems we had. People were late, absent, fighting with others, goofing off, etc. They could NEVER get a job this good anywhere else with their qualifications. The good ones were treated very well--promotions, raises, bonuses, etc., but our turnover was huge. I had to go out there every week to monitor the situation. I came to see that for many people who don't have work (not everyone), it is THEIR OWN FAULT based on how they have treated the opportunities that they had. Oh yeah, and I had a whale of a time trying to find people to do the job in the first place. Amazing!

When talk of cutting state budgets comes up, why do defenders of bloated government always trot out the teachers as their human sheilds? As if teachers were the only government employees....

Less government=good government is a truism rather than a comparison that makes no sense.

As for benefits the illegals don't have access to the education system- their American citizen children certainly do and quite rightly so. Do you want your house cleaner/garden worker to understand English or not?

you do remember that two of them were started by the previous administration..he inherited their headaches, and he needs to end them today.... and dont forget, the previous administration sent troops to Haiti and Liberia to remove regimes in place

as for Perry, I bet he really wants to participate in the "like a good neighbor, state farm is there" commercials, but turn it into a real life situation.....calgon take me away

Perfectly aware of decades of administrations inheriting the wars and problems concerning the middle east. But as one may "inherit" a war, they also must not be immune to "inheriting" the label as a war monger when getting in to addtional wars. There is no double standard.

Back to Perry. Not a fan, but cuts to government in this country must be made.

A few other government workers:

- Guys who show up in bio suits when crazy diseases pop up.
- Guy who recalled a type of cribs after a bunch of baby got their heads crushed by it.
- Guy who fixed a pothole on the road to your house before you hit it going 50 and crashed into a power pole.
- Guy who makes sure disabled veterans get their health care.

Now lets look at where the vast majority of government money goes:

DOD 2010 Budget: $663.8 Billion
Tax Hike Prevention Act of 2010: $858 Billion

For 100 Billion you could wipe out all the states budget deficits, which is 17% of the military budget or 11% of the cost of tax cut extensions.

Now you could argue that we are mixing state and federal budgets, but if the federal govt. didn't control so much at this point it would be much easier for states to deal with their issues.

The fact is that we can not have it all, people want low taxes, a huge military empire, health care, retirement and government services. So if you want low taxes and military empire you vote Republican and pray you never need anything you can't do for yourself .
