My family (husband, one year old son) are thinking of moving from the heights to katy. We are looking at the different neighborhoods and were wondering if we could get some honest feedback on them. We don't need a big house (currently live in 2100 sq ft, planning to look at 3000 sq ft) but we really appreciate high quality, slightly unique homes. It seems like every high quality house is 4000 sq ft or bigger - do the smaller ones exist?

We also are looking for a nice size backyard, probably with a pool. We'd love to be in a neighborhood with running trails and obviously good schools, but not too far from restaurants, etc. We probably won't use other neighborhood amenities that much (like area pool, etc). We've seen some of the ones in Firethorne and like those, but they seem far away (we work in Energy Corridor), and also to have a pretty broad range in quality / price.

Thanks!

Are you looking for new construction? We just bought in Green Trails which is much closer to the Energy Corridor. We moved from near Washington Avenue and couldnt be happier. Our house is 16 years old, but the neighborhood feels a little more established. Houses are moving pretty quick, but prices are really reasonable. We have a 16 month old and love how many young families are in the area!

Cinco, Firethorne & Cross Creek probably have what you are looking for in regards to walking trails. However, Cross Creek is further then Firethorne in regards to your work. Green Trails is nice and they do have some beautiful houses. As far as getting a unique house...that might be a little more difficult. However, you can make the inside as unique and you as you want. The outside in these neighborhoods tend to be cookie cutter (as my brother the architect says!). As far as schools, all of these neighborhoods go to good schools. There is a website www.greatschools.org that you can go to to check out individual ratings. Some people are going to say avoid this school or that school for various reasons. To be honest though, each school will have their issues but overall the quality of your child's education will be good. Some people consider a certain school "ghetto" because apartments feed into that school. Or because the neighborhoods are older and more established instead of shiny and new. So do your own research on the schools vs letting other people's comments sway you. Kelliwood is also nice & established. I would imagine you would find bigger lots with pools to be more common in Kelliwood, Green Trails and older parts of Cinco. Good luck!!
