Lots of hyperbole here as usual. Most of the people talking about these areas don't even go there.

In my time in Houston, I've probably had more difficulty understanding store clerks of Middle Eastern/South Asian origin than facing a language barrier related to Spanish. This is in no way unique to Texas, either.

I'm still trying to understand why some people are offended that somebody asked if there's a part of Houston where people only speak Spanish.

That's because most educated people around the world speak English. If an Italian and German want to speak to each other, they're probably speaking english. English is the universal language for Business, medicine , science, and government. Most people around the world want their kids to learn to speak english. Hell one of my friends wife was getting paid like $80,000 a year tax free to teach kids in the United Arab Emirates how to speak english.

There is no "official" language for the United States, although some individual states list English as their official language. If you would like the United States or your state to adopt an official language, you should contact your elected officials.
USA.gov: The U.S. Government's Official Web Portal
In fact, the American Civil Liberties Union argues that declaring English as the official language of the United States would violate the First Amendment. It will be also inconsistent with basic American traditions of linguistic tolerance.

No. According to:
Exceptions & Accommodations | USCIS
You may be permitted to take the civics test in your native language, but only if your understanding of spoken English is insufficient to conduct a valid examination in English.
If you take the test in your native language, you must bring an interpreter with you to your interview.

English may not be the "offical" language of the U.S.,(and that has more to do with political correctness) but anybody with half a brain knows in order to make it in the counrty, you have to know how to speak english. People who only speak spanish will be confined to scrubbing toliets and cutting grass the rest of their lives.

There are equal numbers of Spanish speaking only communities and English speaking only communities. Zero.

You are right,
that's why I don't understand why it bothers anybody if somebody chooses to scrub toilets for the rest of their life

Same people that claim to love freedom, don't like it when people don't think like them

English is the language of commerce and should be required to become a citizen here. The immigrants that do not promote this with their children are only doing them a disservice.

BTW - the French would be speak German if it were not for the US...I could care less what they think.

And don't forget flying. To be an airline pilot, anywhere in the world, you must speak English.

English to become compulsory for pilots - Telegraph

It's the same reason why some get offended if someone asked for an English only community.
