Is there white privilege in Houston?
That's what a professor in Tomball Lone Star College asked his students in a class about diversity.
It's sad that people in universities get away with asking this kind of questions

Some students upset about 'white privileges' assignment at Lone Star College - Dec. 3rd, 2014

Quote:
A controversial assignment from one professor at Lone Star College - Tomball campus has some students upset. At least one of them has filed a complaint and refused to complete the assignment.

"I was shocked, I thought it was a joke," the student told Local 2. He asked not to be identified because he doesn't want any backlash from the professor for speaking out.

The lesson was a "White Privileges" worksheet.

"There was a white privileges handout and a white privileges checklist and a white privileges quiz to see how privileged you are as a white person."

I'm not white, but this stupid. White privilege?

This type of thinking is what sets people back.

LOL Lone Star College. Nothing more than some wannabe intellectual stirring the pot.

As a white man, I would return the quiz to the instructor's desk and tell him it is my academic privilege to seek a much better education at an institution that does not rely on race baiting tactics.

This is Lone Star College we are talking about. What a joke.

I'm not white, but I think is hilarious how much talk there is in this country about "white privilege"
but nobody (news media) ever talk about "rich privilege"

This country needs to stop asking people their race if we ever want to move forward.

I remember at UT one of my white male professors spoke about white privilege and how it's real. While I do believe white privilege exists so do other privileges. Heterosexual privilege, able-bodied privilege, male privilege, etc...

White privilege totally exists. You don't have to look past the local news to see that, but to Dopo's point, rich privilege trumps them all.

You got it. Most likely someone with a PhD that couldn't get a tenure track academic position and now is pushing an agenda out of frustration.

That said, the students should have fun with the assignment rather than get mad. If the instructor wants to be "edgy" then the students should submit unexpected answers.

Careful thinkers don't entirely discount the possibility that turtles run the universe, so I don't understand why when confronted with an infinitely likelier possibility--like the possibility that whites have it easier than people of other colors--there's this weird short circuit that happens and people just refuse to even acknowledge it as a possibility. The ladies be protesting too much, I think.

In my own experience, I have noted that the people who serve me at stores, restaurants and other daily stops are almost all people of color. Of course, people of color are also served by people of color, but that doesn't mean there isn't a significant imbalance. Otoh, most of the wealthy people I know here are white. So at some point I have to either conclude that white people are just intrinsically better at getting money and running things or that white people have come into these positions based on some sort of privilege. At this point, armed with what I know of history and how it works, I do conclude that white privilege is the reason so many whites in Houston have it so good.

As to the professor's assignment, time will tell. Will history books in 50 years mention that whites in our era were privileged? I'm guessing yes. I'm also guessing there will be a few people around still dismissing the notion out of hand, but progress comes slow.
