Hello, my 7 year old currently attends highly capable program (GT program) in Seattle and we are moving to Houston for the next academic year. Can he transfer to one of the Vangard magnet programs with his past scores for testing? Any one with similar experience transferring from out of state?
Thank you!

The vanguard spots are highly sought after with very long waitlists via random lottery.

Being out of district and you're well after the application period, I think there is no chance to get transferred into a vanguard until you move into the district.

Will need to test here.

Even regular ISD GT will not transfer to a new ISD.

My son was already GT in Klein ISD, and when we moved to Katy ISD he had to retest. No transfer.

Here is the space available list for HISD : http://www.houstonisd.org/cms/lib2/T...ailable_17.pdf

There actually are some spaces available at Vanguard schools, but there are many neighborhood schools with better reputations. Here is a good list to check: http://173.45.238.175/content/wp-con...TO-UPLOAD2.pdf

Call the campus you are interested in attending and see if the grade level is capped. The Vanguard elementaries have a zoned population too. However, you need to find out if there is space available before renting or buying.

Bring your grades and testing, but your child will not officially be "vanguard". It might help with placement. Good luck!

The first year we lived in HISD we had to put our son in regular classes and then we transferred him into Vanguard the next year after we had time to test.

Thank you all so much! My son will be in 3rd grade. Any recommendations for public or private elementary schools with an accelerated curriculum in Houston?
I will be working at MD Anderson, but have no idea about schools as well as which neighborhoods to choose when it comes to commute and good schools.

Here are the just released school rankings from Children at Risk. I linked to Elementary since your son is going into 3rd grade.

Here's the statewide public school rankings for all K-12. Houston schools are near the bottom of the page:
