Why is the weather in Houston, TX so bad? (Austin: school, living in)

Is it simply because of the combination of heat and humidity? I have been to other places around the country for business, and nothing is as bad as Houston during the summer. The best word to describe the humidity is "oppressive".

It's bad. I don't think there's any way to sugarcoat our summers. But that said, we have 6 months of really pleasant weather most years and I'll take that trade-off.


I've lived in places like Chicago (horrendous winter and people don't realize how hot the summers get) and New York and Philadelphia (similar to Chicago but not as severe at either end) and I think Houston when viewed in terms of year round weather is underrated. Not everyone can live in California.

I enjoy Houston's weather. I lived in IL, IA, CT, CA, MD and I like Houston almost the best. But then I am not an outdoors person, at least not during the summer. I don't jog I love the mild winters. I like the fact that you use the pool from April to October (with a little bit of a pool heater help). The heat, as long as it is below 100, doesn't bother me much.

I would prefer that the water in my backyard pool was not soup-temperature during the height of the summer. But that's a minor problem.

You answered your own question, heat and humidity. The longer you live in Houston, I think you become used to the oppressive heat & humidity. It doesn't mean you like it because I don't, nor do likeminded folks, but you learn to adjust your routine accordingly. Houston's peak heat times are between 12pm-4pm. The good thing is that Galveston is not far away so you can take a day trip to cool off on the beach there.

Being from Denver (I bet you had no idea, not even based on my user name! ;-) ) I am thankful for Houston "winters". Granted, Denver never had winters like Chicago or what have you, but it was still cold in the winter. I suppose that now in the summer it's no fun, but come December, when other places are getting snowfall, we'll be having warm temperatures.

Plus, after living in Austin, I can say that the heat will be there no matter where you are in TX...

There are some pros of Houston with regards to the weather and that is because there is enough humidity in the summer to sometimes have rain, you don't have to heavily irrigate. Also the winter is so mild you can almost grow tropical things, although there will be some years those plants will be killed off to the soil during an arctic blast.

I prefer Austin weather. It's been around 100 but our dewpoint is 59 whereas it is 70+ dewpoint in Houston. So it makes a big difference in comfort level. Austin is kind of the "sweet spot" because any further west and it's just too arid and you have to irrigate like mad to grow anything. Anything further east and there are too many mosquitoes like in Houston. Anything further north and there are too many ice storms and other disruptions in the winter that make getting around hard and cancel school and stuff. Anything further south and there is no semblance of winter at all.

So my preference is not Houston but I understand it's not a totally bad climate.

Yep. Way more than I "enjoy" Chicago winters, indoors and heated.
