Live on Campus! If he's coming from Kingwood, he will enjoy the college life and living in Houston. UH is second in the state in on-campus population. I guess it depends on the experience he wants for this chapter of his life.

Thank you all for all the replies. Very helpful. What about safety downtown when you have to walk between stops when it's dark? Any other concerns about traveling with the light rail to UH?

Thank you all for the replies. Very helpful information. What about safety when transfering from park and ride to light rail downtown and you have to walk between stops?

Most students would rather live at home and commute with the area being so sketchy. There are a lot of non-Houstonians who resort to the dorms because apartments are too expensive or unfamiliar with the city. The Houstonians on campus are burned out from driving from Houston traffic.

Though the parking fee is nothing compared to getting in the dorms or the rental of a slightly off-campus (Inner Loop) apartment. Home is also more comfy and spacious compared to the spartan and cramped dorms.

Hopefully towards the end this upcoming decade, the Third Ward and Eastwood (across I-45) areas will improve in housing quality as redevelopment slowly pushes eastward!

Downtown is actually very safe. Undergrads rarely have nighttime classes (my experience in Bauer business undergrad only offered daytime classes, as the evenings catered to MBA's coming to campus after work).

Just be careful crossing the streets, which should not be a problem with a grown adult! The only time it would be dark during his commute would be the evening rush hour during the shorter days of the winter (which does not make much of both semesters) or if he has an early morning class (like 8:00 am).

Your son should be researching these things.

Put it this way, the closer to UH and TSU you get, the more ghetto 3rd Ward is. The further away from the universities, the better 3rd Ward gets.

Some classmates of mine rented apartments in The Galleria/Uptown area since they wanted to live in a decent area close to school. Another batch lived in Greenway Plaza condos. I was surprised that they actually had the means! The more desperate lived in the newish Midtown apartments.

Coming from the suburbs, the drive in only gets bad once inside the 610 loop because of the substandard, narrower freeways. But if traffic is light from late morning to mid-afternoon, then it's a breeze to campus.

I would not skimp on the parking passes; the ones in the remote areas of campus had car break-in articles in the campus newspaper. (So park in a garage or in a surface lot closer to the center of campus!)
