I thought those areas were very overpriced. Particularly the Heights. I don't think the schools in the Heights are very good either.

Well, for starters, I don't have a job offer in South Florida...

The answer is obviously the Woodlands and Montgomery County. Not that there aren't other nice suburbs, that's just the most upscale and centered around the attempt to maintain perfection in every aspect. If its too far from your job and you don't like trees, you'll have to look elsewhere, but if the question is what is the closest thing to OC in the area, there you go.

I do, however, recommend checking out perhaps the Villages and areas near CityCentre.

Well, this is NOT Orange County. LOL

This is SE Texas and it is VERY different and trying to find something similar is kind of a crazy thing to be searching for.

You are trying to compare areas of the country that are VERY different and that is going to be very difficult.

Cypress is NOT all dilapidated strip malls...please.

Sounds like you really do not like Texas....why exactly ARE you wanting to move here?

The schools in the Heights are just fine. As are most HISD schools in the areas you are likely to live. Our son went to Heights area schools for 12 years, and received a good education.

One thing to keep in mind is that the HISD tax rate is the lowest in the Houston area, and offers the largest homestead exemption in the area.

Prices may be coming down, but OP's budget is well under anything on the market in River Oaks. Per HAR, the lowest-priced property in River Oaks proper is ~$3.7MM.

Even the Villages might be too pricey - the vast majority of properties are listed >$1MM and most are >$2MM.

There's nothing really like that area of Southern Orange County. The Woodlands and Cinco Ranch might be the closest but you already tried The Woodlands so maybe you should focus on Plano/Frisco or lower your expectations.

Sugar Land or The Woodlands reminds me the most of South OC if youre sticking with the Houston area. There are very few places in America like South OC where you get such a large swath of nice well planned suburbia. Houston doesnt have an area like this due to how it developed. Collin County (DFW area) is basically South OC if you moved it to the heartland prairie, and the closest thing outside California to South OC in build.
