We're very involved in our kid's school PTA. Well, they had this silent auction thing to raise money and we won a bid for a one night stay at the Hilton Suites in the Galleria. So my wife and I had a little vacation this weekend and I took my camera along. Hope you enjoy.

Here's the view from the Hotel room:

Then we walked on over to the Galleria Mall:

At the Fox Sports Bar:

Main area:

Then we headed to Rice Village to have some drinks and tapas at Mi Luna (these two shots are not of Mi Luna, just added them in just to show folks that people in Houston do hang out outside):

Back at the hotel, took a couple of night time shots from the window (still working on the nighttime shots):

The next morning, went back to the Rice U area and took in some shots of the residential areas. In my opinion, the nicest residential area in Houston:

I for one would love to live in the shadow of the Ashby high rise....blocking the sun, lowering my light bill....I guess when you're rich enough to live over there you don't care about that stuff.

Great stuff as always. Wish I had something to take pictures at night like that with.

Beautiful neighborhood but it's just weird how few people are out and about. Seems so dead but I guess that is what happens in suburbs.

Hmm, not really weird considering this is a Sunbelt, auto-oriented city. That's how it is in most every other Sunbelt, auto-oriented city I've lived in and visited. If you want to see more people out and about in this particular area, you would need to go to nearby Rice U, Rice Village and other commercial areas, The Medical Center, Hermann Park, the museums, or to the jogging trail around Rice in the evenings. That's just the way it goes.

Well, perhaps that is the "way it goes" but that doesn't mean it's not strange.

They are nice photos though.

What houstoner meant is that it's not strange for a city in the Sunbelt (it's more of a balance thing)...commercial space is for meeting people and residential areas are for living (in peace).

Great pics RGV!

100th post!

I guess I had a different expectation of the Rice U area (that is the area photoed I believe).

If I'm not mistaken I think it is within the 610. I thought areas within the loop were more urban and walkable. The neighborhood pictured, although certainly nice, seems like a typical suburb...at least to me. Just weird...but anyway.

Well, now, sounds like a little history lesson is in order... Here's the ueber-abridged version: the Rice U area consists of a collection of neighborhoods that were suburbs at one time. It was considered the edge of town, like everything outside of downtown was. But the City of Houston kept growing and growing and growing and later added the 610 freeway loop (which is as much an ideological boundary as a physical one) and voilà! you get the Beast known as Houston that we have today. So some areas within the loop are urban-suburban, I think is what we've agreed to call it. Suburban in the built environment, but urban in the way life goes on, if that makes sense. Did you check out the HAIF link I gave you a while back? There's lots of info and background on Houston neighborhoods there.

You might wanna reconsider that job offer, it it's not too late.
