And please, do tell me what is wrong with Stratford High School? Number 15 in the Houston Metro on the Chronicle list, 2008 Newsweek ranked 247th in the country, primarily white, upper-middle to upper class, low ESL enrollment, high GT enrollment, SAT scores in line with Memorial.... So I really don't understand your statement.
Yes, Memorial is ranked slightly better to primarily due to all upper class students.....but comeon...it's still one of the best High Schools in the Houston area.

PS- the op said 400k, you can't move into a liveable house in 77024 for 400k. It's even getting hard to find that in parts of the "slums" <snicker> of 77079 zoned to Stratford.

(Edit) oh.wait......I see you're from Sugarland......nevermind.

For the OP:

Here's the National List for Texas of best High Schools
America's Top Public High Schools | Newsweek Best High Schools | Newsweek.com

The burbs are nice and shiney and everything, but I just wanted to let you know you do have options to live somewhere VERY close to work, in places with schools and neighborhoods as good or better than exburbia. I'm native Houstonian, and I certainly know my city and would never recommend anything sketchie. The fact is that at 400k you can afford to live in town in a nice area. The sacrifice is having to live in an older home. The bonus is lower taxs and the fact that you aren't on the freeway all the time burning gas/

If you work in Sugarland.. Sugarland=Great schools/Great place to live. If you work in Cypress...Cypress=great place to live. If you work near Kingwood/Airport...Kingwood=great place to live. If you work in Westchase or EC,..West Memorial=Great schools/great place to live...etc. See where I'm going?

Default Low Income/Sugar Land Schools

I noticed a higher percentage of low income students in many of the Sugar Land schools (Houston Chronicle School List) than I would have expected. I was surprised by this statistic since it seems, on paper, to be composed of mostly planned housing communities. Katy did not have the same percent of low income students. Does anyone know why this would be so different?

There are parts of Sugar Land that border low income areas in northern Ft. Bend county.
There are many homes & apartments in 77083 that are zoned to George Bush HS...(Avoid that Area). also Avoid Willoridge, Marshall, and Hightower HS.

Ft. Bend ISD has 77478 and 77479.
77479 has better school but housing is more expensive than 77478.
You can find a good community between Cullinan Park and Golf club with good schools.
Geographically it is closer to Oyster Creek Elementary school but it is belongs to Lakeview Elementary school which is one of the best.
The high school is Stephen F Austin High school which is also one of the best.

77459 is another zip to consider. I think Elkins High is the best highschool zoned to that zip, ranks #3 in the area after Clements and Austin High (both in Sugar Land while Elkins is in Missouri City).

You should look into Katy. Look at Greater Katy with affluent areas in South Katy with schools zoned to Taylor High School, Cinco Ranch High School, and Seven Lakes High School. You may be able to have a custom home made for that kind of money in a GREAT area of Seven Meadows/Cinco Ranch Southwest. The commute will be good if you take the Westpark Tollway.

Good luck!
