We dont have apple picking but there is Blueberry picking in June. several orchards within 3 hours. One is in Conroe and another Kings Orchard is up near Plantersville.
I always recommend Gruene because I dont think many people not from Texas know about it.
Floating the Frio River is fun and not as popular as floating the Comal and Guadalupe.
Bush library in College Station.

I was actually REALLY impressed by George H.W. Bush's Presidential Library in College Station. That's within a 3 hour drive. I didn't even care for the guy, but the amount of history in the museum there is incredible, and really well done.

The casinos in Lake Charles (or another 45 minutes to Coushatta in Kinder, LA).

If you find that to be low brow, there are a lot of folksy things to do in Bastrop, Texas, along SH 71 approximately 120 miles to the west of Houston and about 35 minutes east of Austin.

I agree.

I found Round Top with its intriguing Festival campus so interesting and unusual- totally unexpected. The general area is lovely to saunter around.
