Congratulations on the job offer!

Have you asked someone in HR if they might be able to give you some recs from your future co-workers?

When I took a job in Buffalo after living 8 yrs in San Antonio, I was at a total loss because of the location of my job. It was on the fringe of several iffy neighborhoods but I wanted to be close to it because of the hours I had to keep. In San Antonio, I pretty much knew where to look and what neighborhoods to avoid. I also knew people whose recommendations I could trust.

My future co-workers were vital in hooking me up with a beautiful rental about a 10 min walk to work (or very short drive) in a transitional neighborhood. I would never have found that rental on my own (in a brownstone walk-up) as the owners, a friend of a colleague, obtained their tenants largely by recommendations & word of mouth.

HTH and good luck!

It is highly unlikely you will be robbed at gunpoint n the 77079 zip
Look at apartments on Eldridge and Memorial. Tons of them

You're going to find in Houston that you can have bad, middle of the road and nice apartments all in the same zipcode. 77079 is actually more home than apartment oriented, although it has many apartments as well. It's generally upscale.

Houstson's so big though, let's say your fiance worked in downtown, you'd probably want to split the commute. You can find loads of apartments to choose from on Dairy Ashford or Eldridge, just south of I-10 in or around 77079, but like I say if your fiance ends up working way from there it may not be the best choice.

A nice apartment pricing in the $800-900 might be difficult to locate, but they are there. My daughter rents a 2 bdrm apartment for $975 (off 1960), but it's a very nice and secure community with regular patrols. 77079 area is actually West Houston/Dairy Ashford area and generally it's considered a very nice area of town. Crime is everywhere in Houston, but mostly it's in your low income neighborhoods (eg SW Houston, East Houston, several of your central Houston neighborhoods). I'd get with an apartment locator service. You can also contact the Houston Chamber of Commerce for a relocation packet. Personally, I recommend renting a house rather than an apartment (slightly more in $$, but definitely safer too - but my own daughter won't listen to me about that advice either). Good Luck!

77079 is an extremely nice area to live. Single Family homes are 350k- 1.5 million.

The apartments however aren't that great. Not all that horrible either in Houston terms.

I agree though, head a little west to Eldridge and Memorial/Briar Forest. Avoid the "Tully" area. Or more east to Gessner and Briar Forest.. I think the Woodlake Apartments used to be pretty good.

Thank you everyone for your help. I guess I need to clarify the rent I want to pay. I could see paying 900-950. For a lg one bedroom or a small 2 bedroom
