That's how it worked for the first hundred years or so of the US. Then the Know Nothing (American Republican) Party started to stir up a bunch of fear about how the evil Catholics were gonna overwhelm us and the Pope would rule America by proxy (lucky we have come a long way from this simplistic type of political grandstanding since then....). Even with that there were no limits on immigration until 1882 when a bill was passed to block immigration by the Chinese (taking our jobs!). Serious Immigration laws were not enacted until 1924, put into place to stem the tide of immigrants from less desirable southern and eastern European countries (people who are considered white today, like the Irish and Italians were considered inferior then as some might view Mexicans today). In 1927 an immigration cap was put into place and has been tinkered with ever since. There were no penalties for using illegal immigrant labor until 1986 with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

If a law is not on the books, it cannot be violated. Millions of Europeans who immigrated here and passed through the various immigration way points in NY, Galveston, etc. were not breaking any laws. Those who come to the US in a car trunk are. I'm not understanding your point.

Actually, people who have no other option are going to work harder than those who do. Unskilled labor is generally (the OP is an exception) the sole province of those who do not have the education and/or language skills to do anything else.

There are millions of native born Americans who have been shoved out of jobs by illegal immigrants who are willing to work off the books, and by the businesses who hire them. Those screaming the loudest about how those of us who are anti-(illegal) immigration are just racists generally are white liberals and socialists who see the illegals as their battering ram for seizing a larger piece of federal spending.

To OP: If you can't stand and work in the hot sun for about an hour before taking a sip of water, work for an hour straight in the hot sun before taking a break than you might as well forget about being a day laborer.

I'm also having bad luck with Mechanical Engineering, Technical Writing, and CAD work... But I'm lucky as I get $806 monthly on SSDI. I have a BSME for the Univ of IL at Urbana Champaign [top 6 college for that].
Mechanical Engineering and CAD work should be in high demand. It seems EVERY sector has been experiencing job losses except for healthcare. I checked the US Department of Labor as my source.

Default Cameron and NOV

Have you tried applying here? Cameron Careers (http://www.c-a-m.com/content/careers/index.cfm - broken link) I know someone who works there and they are so busy and have been for a long time and he does CAD work. No degree just many years of that type of work and there is one young person working there who is just finishing up his Bachelors in M.E.

Also might try National Oilwell Varco @ the Beltway and Beechnut location. Try applying at the mission group there.

I'm having a hard time buying this post. Degrees, fortune 500 company and you want to take a labor job? Worried about having too much education for fast food or retail -- omit the degrees from the app process and voila - a h.s. education only.

I agree texas7. If he is smart enough to get a Master's Degree he should be smart enough to figure out how to lie on a McDonalds' application to make himself look hireable.

If you could not prove your identity, you were illegal. Many were detained. Most stayed as it was cost prohibitive to send illegals back. Illegal immigration most certainly existed during the times of Ellis Island.

98% of immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island were approved and let in legally.
