So, we (myself and my parents) will not be moving until this fall, but I'm wondering if anyone has moved from Minnesota or surrounding states to the Houston area and used a moving company? If so, how much did it cost you? How many rooms did you have in your house? What about renting the BIG Uhaul truck and doing it yourself? If we do that, I expect we'll hire a group of movers down there to help unload, as we have friends and family who will help us pack up.

If you're not comfortable posting here, you can PM me. I'm hoping it's under a few thousand, but I have no idea...

Thanks!

We moved a 3 bedroom, 1900 sqr ft house from Austin to Michigan in 2005. It was a full service move-we did nothing. The packing, loading, driving etc were all done by the moving company. They also moved our car. It cost between 5-6K if I remember correctly.

We did a full scale move between Corpus Christi and Houston and that cost us $3K w/o car.

I don't see how a full service move from MN to TX would cost under $3K

We moved from San Diego; Two cars, one large Penske truck with a trailer....never stopped off at a hotel, just rest areas..... rental with gas & food included for three was about 4 to 5k (company paid for our relo) keep in mind we kept the truck for a few extra days, after a long drive like that.....you're not wanting to do any work for awhile lol

Take it from someone who has moved quite a bit, never deal with U-haul, they are one of the worst companies in the country and will try to rip you off left and right. If you plan to get a moving truck use Budget.

Thanks everyone for the replies! The trip is 1,100 miles about, and we planned on stopping to sleep and rest as I'm still recovering from two brain surgeries (3yr. full recovery time) and I also can't be of really any help lifting more than 20lbs so I'd rather they do the full service moving company as they're moving down there to RETIRE.

We'll be sure to look into it more, and I guess not look into U Haul, as this is not the only concern I've heard of about them.

Thanks again!

If you use a full service company it is vital that you check references and their BBB standing. There are a small number of moving companies that will try to pull a scam on you where they quote you a low price then call you before drop off to give you a much higher price due to "unexpected expenses". If you refuse to pay they will then threaten to seize all your household belongings.
