Just about all of them are privately owned.

Just about all of them USED to have a building on them.

In most you can still see the foundation of the old building.

Many were demolished decades ago in order to build bigger and taller towers, but a ton of plans fell through. If you look at old pics of Houston (50-70 years ago) the downtown was wall to wall buildings. Some however were demolished specifically to make room for surface parking.

Good News for Cy-Fair. Heb opening a new store at Jones and West. Heb will take over the old Randalls. Their are few things that make a neighborhood as bad as an abandoned grocery store.

I have not heard anything on Katy Ranch Crossing lately, but years ago the rumor was a Lowes going in there. Here is the site map for the development.

Surprised nobody mentioned the Hines announcement yet.

Latest Hines project in Houston gets splashy unveiling next week - Houston Business Journal

Hines , the homegrown mega-developer of office buildings and all things related to commercial real estate, plans to announce its newest Houston project April 4 at the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors’ Commercial Expo 2012.
Could it be a new downtown skyscraper? Possibly. Houston-based Hines is on the record saying the surface parking lot it has owned for years on the downtown block bounded by Main, Texas, Fannin and Capitol is being held for future development. Hines exec Mark Cover told me a year ago that a project at the site was not imminent when rumors to that effect began ...

I read somewhere that the Galleria is thinking about expanding to become the 3rd largest mall in America. Is this true?

I think it was the 3rd largest back in the day. Maybe even second. All the huge ones now are younger or underwent expansion
