Or if you got suckered into living in a less than desirable part of town.

Yep, 600/month rent with ~175 for electricity, cable (w/HD package), internet, and everything else in a garden style apartment in a street grid, street-lined, and architecturally interesting area with all my amenities within biking distance.

Yep, doing a bit of research certainly pays off.

Yea I try to stay positive. When you are from someplace that are miles behind the times like I am you learn to appreciate places like Houston. Folks that complain are ungrateful and don't know what they have.

I love Houston. I am originally from Pakistan and now residing in Houston. I believe Houston is one of the best cities to live in. Houses are extremely cheap as compared to other cities. People are nice! Food is awesome and Houston is cultural.

People complain about hot weather but I think we sit in our air conditioned offices for 10 hours a day so little sweat won't hurt.

You guys don't know how good you have it. I guess that saying is true "One man's trash is another man's treasure".

I wish I could find a way to move out there within a month
Come on get real all that matters about utilities is price. Having one affordable utility company is vastly superior to having multiple expensive utility companies.

In fact having multiple utility companies and having to spend hours on the phone every billing cycle trying to find cheaper power is a pain. Also if you happen to lose your job or need to move you can easily have your lease and power contract out of sync which will cost you extra hundreds of dollars.

Deregulation benefits the wealthy power brokers, and hurts the consumer period. Deregulation was sold to the consumer as a way to reduce their bills and bills are up over 50% since that time. Its a failure and the citizens should be working daily to repeal it like the citizens of Virginia did once they realized the scam.

That's not too bad. A little more than my burb hood, where a ~1700 sq ft, 15yo starter home would go for 180-190k. Older, farther out will be less but your repairs and transportation will be higher.

Go inside the loop and at your price the place may be an old condo needing some work, a newer one made out of railcar containers, or a crack house worth $20k on land that's worth $190k.

Utility bills aren't much better than that, and neither is median income.

Methinks you need to run some accurate numbers before moving here on bad ones.

Hmm....I bought a 3000 sq ft, 5/3/2 two year old home for less than $200K, and I'm closer to the city than most of Clear Lake. And before I bought the one that I'm in now, I looked at dozens similar to it.

I agree that ITL the prices get much higher, but around the beltway, there is definitely more home to be had for the same $200K.
