This is a very inspiring thread and I enjoyed all the many helpful, nonjudgmental <s> responses. If I were looking today, I would do all of these things. Many years ago, I was a single mother with 3 young children. I did whatever, whenever I could. If someone offered me advice or help, I took it. Eventually, I applied for "anything" at an mobile home sales lot and the owner was a frustrated musician who happened to be a CPA. He taught me enough bookkeeping to get me started and I took it from there. I will never forget that man. I could never pay it forward enough.

People have to have a survivor instinct and be willing to take advantage of every opportunity, no matter how slim.

Good luck. All gave you excellent advice.

It was really hard. I injured my back pretty severely about a year and a half ago, maybe two years. All of this work has aggravated the old injury and my back still hurts, even after 3 days off, and I have to go back tomorrow.

Thanks for your concern. No, I can't take off. I just had three days off. I'll just have to try to power through it.

I have an injury at my L5. It flares up occasionally.

I've had MRIs - and even the best doctors at Stanford in CA said - the best treatment for back pain is ... to let the inflammation subside through rest, PT and muscle relaxants. I was surprised to hear that from a back surgeon.

If the pain does not go away, they said they can prescribe steroid injections.
I was fully insured - HMO ---

Barring a doctor appt and prescription meds, try alternating ice and heat. Ice for about 15-20 mins, then wait about 15 minutes off of the ice and then heat for about 15-20 minutes. It really makes a difference. The ice will help reduce the inflammation (which is where pain originates) and then the heat increases the blood flow to the area to help with the healing process.

I have to do this frequently (along with my scripts) and it really helps.

Yes - part of PT included alternating ice and heat, raising my feet at an angle - propped against the bed while lying on the floor, stretching exercises.

There are some electrical devices that numb or fool the nerve synapses and relax the muscles too ...
I would do all of the above.

I injured my knee a few years back and under-went Physical Therapy. The main point of PT is to let your body heal itself. Meantime, all the exercise above is to help the body to heal itself, ice to reduce swelling, heat to promote blood circulation, and range of motion/ stretching exercises to improve flexibility and avoid the muscle to stiffen up. The electrical device does the same. Later, more exercise to build strength to the muscle and body balance. One important lesson I learned from PT is to be patience and let the body heal itself. If it hurts, don't push it, and wait until it heals.

There are ways to prevent your back from giving out again, wear a back support belt for example. Take anti-inflammatory OTC medicine helps.
