I've started looking at the times article.

What is the blossomwood area? I saw that in one of the articles...

Blossomwood is East of Huntsville Hospital; rough bounds are E. of California, S. of McClung (Maple Hill Cemetary), W. of Monte Sano Mountain (Land Trust) and N. of Governors.

Great neighborhood, IMO overpricey (but isn't everything), location^3

Default Reactionary..

Well, I have always bought for location, and haven't been wrong yet! When it comes to homes, you get what you pay for.

I would just like to have a newer home...say 1980s? We currently live in a 1960s house and its the NEWEST we have ever bought. I long for larger closets and two car garages.

of course, the schools come first..I'm really confused as to what to do..sigh decisions, decisions...LOL

Blossomwood is a beautiful area and a wonderful neighboorhood, but like Reactionary said, it is quite pricey as it is just about the most desired location in Huntsville. Right across from it though (South of Governors), is another wonderful, Covemont. It is a little less expensive and just as nice. I believe there are a couple of very nice houses on the market in that neighboorhood currently. I have no idea what your budget for houses are, but expect to pay from 350-600k for the average house in these areas.

Thanks!

Covemont is the neighboorhood that I was talking about primarily. It is just south of Governors, right across from Blossomwood and very similar to it. From what I've seen and heard you can get a nice fix-er-up for around 350k, with the average nice house going for 500k. There are portions of the neighboorhood that get into the millions as well though. I'm not sure about blossomwood's pricing, but from what I hear it is about 50k more on average.

zenjenn - Huntsville High only scores lower than Grissom because of the diversity you mention
I had assumed that this was the case. One of the reasons I am wary of super-high test scores a homogeneous population is that I do think it is good for kids to be exposed to a cross-section of the population, rich, poor, middle-class.

It's not about some fantasy that all these kids are going to join hands and sing "We are the World", it's about learning to interact with people from different backgrounds (even if those interactions are just casual or even occasionally unpleasant.) If my child were at a really homogeneous school for some reason (by choice or circumstance) I'd want to make outside efforts to expose my child to a variety of people.

zenjenn - the problem with the 'occasionally unpleasant' is that sometimes it's way more unpleasant than you expect. A magnet school principal here was 'counseled' after it was made public that he had been telling the magnet kids to avoid the 'local' kids - because the local kids had been hooking the magnet kids on crack... Too un-PC of him...
