It sounded like in Harry's situation that she did.

<shrug> They didn't have the wedding when I was there. They also didn't have a lot of money, so the photoshoot probably served dual purpose for them.

Harry, I have no engagement photos, no engagement ring, and a book of wedding proofs (we didn't even bother to order prints). I didn't even wear a wedding dress on my wedding day, instead opting for a modest bridesmaid's gown in my favorite color (hunter green).

Very happily married though, 16 years and going. So I see what you are saying.. We had the money, too, for photo shoots and other typical wedding extravagances - but opted to spend what we had on a very adventurous honeymoon and a down payment on a home our first year of marriage.

I regret nothing!

I'm currently racking my brain on where would be great places to take engagement photos.

Any suggestions other than Botanical Gardens or Green Mountain?

Any secret places you may know of that is picturesque?

I would focus more on the photographer than the place. A great photographer can make great photos at just about any location. It has more to do with the person behind the camera than the place the photos are taken. The photographers in this area will know the good locations to photograph at. They have their special places that they know how to work.

We're similar. We were also extremely low key. I think I wore a hat that day. We got married less for us (we already considered ourselves married) and more for the government and insurance companies. I didn't dress up to get my driver's license either, although they did take my photo.

A lot of the ritual is personal or cultural. I remember one of my co-workers gave his daughter a hugely expensive wedding - filet mignon dinners for the wedding guests at a very expensive Miami Beach restaurant and all the accoutrements. The total bill undoubtedly reached well into the six figures. She divorced the guy within two years.

One of the happiest weddings I ever attended was that of a couple who didn't have enough money for a pot to pee in between them. It was held in an old Grange Hall, and the joy was palpable and uninhibited.
