Retired Major League baseball player Don Mincher lives here. At various times he's been general manager and part-owner of the Huntsville Stars. He's now the president of the Southern League. Another former MLB player, pitcher Jimmy Key, is from here. He has World Series rings from 1992 with Toronto, and 1996 with the Yankees. I think he lives in Florida now.

Former NASCAR Cup driver Jimmy Means is from here. I remember watching him race at Huntsville Speedway. He lives in North Carolina now.

I believe former Boston Celtic player and head coach M.L. Carr lives in Huntsville also.

On a sidenote, I used to umpire girls softball when I was a teenager and once got cussed by Mr. Stallworth for calling his daughter out on strikes in a softball game back around 1990 or so. No hard feelings though...

Stallworth still lives on Dug Hill Road...now he can cuss me!

Bankhead Parkway here in Huntsville was named for Tallulah.

Ernie Ashworth, former popular country music star was from Ardmore area--don't know if he's still alive. His brother is...nice guy.

Admiral Frank B. Kelso, once the top dog in the Navy, is from nearby Lincoln County and has retired back there.

The lady who wrote "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" lives in Lincoln County...but she doesn't want anyone to know her real name!

Sure about that? Most Bankhead "things" (including Bankhead Forest) are named for her father William B., who was the U.S. Speaker of the House.

Patsy Shropshire of Elmo and Patsy? Apparently Elmo re-recorded the song a couple of times to cut her out of any royalties after the divorce.

Yup, and a good time was then had by all...

You're right about Bankhead Parkway--apparently it was named for the entire family...

Maybe that'll be my mistake for the day...but I doubt it!

The monument at the foot of Bankhead Parkway dedicates the road to "Wm B. Bankhead". I drive past it often, can't believe I misattributed it to Tallulah (maybe that was my mistake for the day back on May 21, 2008).

skinem - is the town of Skinem TN up around the State line named after you?

Heck I don't even want to think about the utility costs...glad it's not mine!!

11k in property taxes is not bad.... I just moved from NJ where a 1000 sq ft house you would pay 5 - 6 k. House of that size in NJ you would probably pay >100k a year in taxes....
