IRON FAMILY HIKE #1

Start Date: February 15

Hours: 2-4 PM

Admission: No admission charged

Directions: From Memorial Parkway go east on Airport Road, cross over Whitesburg Drive & continue on Carl T. Jones Drive, left onto Cecil B. Ashburn Drive. Look to the right at the top of Blevins Gap for the graveled parking area. A small Land Trust sign marks the lot

Contact: (256) 532-5975 Huntsville, AL 35801

LandTrust HSV > Events (http://landtrust-hsv.org/events - broken link)

Unfortunately, there are no details about the subsequent events at this time, although there are references of five hikes for Spring'09 out there.

A personal comment: we went on this hike/trail before and it is not as easy as the ones on Monte Sano, although it is rated "moderate", same as MSano. However, it is manageable at a slower pace (our guide was kind of "sprinting") , and the views from atop on a clear/sunny day are MAGNIFICENT: South Hsv on one side, Hampton Cove on the other.

A recommendation: If you can carpool with friends, neighbors, please do so, as the parking space is (relatively) scarce. It really depends on how many people show up, but it can happen to run out of space. As one of the guides said last year at the TxGiving hike, they are seeing more and more people every time.

P.S. Watch the weather: the hike is cancelled if it's raining the day of (not sure about prior days).

I've hiked through there with my then 4 year old daughter, just a few miles before we headed back...I wound up carrying her to the car. At a slower pace, yes.

However, it is a lovely hike and we may be prompted to do it again...I'll just eat my Wheaties that morning.

Charles,

there might be... unsecured, from the houses backing up the trail, or maybe from the big antenna atop ... who knows? never thought of lugging my laptop along...
