I woke up earlier than usual this morning with burning eyes and coughing. The air outside looks like we are sitting in a fog bank. The smoke is getting inside the house.

We get smoke every year, but right now, this is the worst I've ever seen it. Usually, the air-conditioning will keep the smoke out of the house, but the AC is over-matched and overwhelmed.

There are a lot of fires burning, spread out over several surrounding states, as well as the fires in Idaho. Fires all over the place.

Does anyone know what the black squares are on the Idaho fire map? I can't find anything in the map legend that explain what those are.

Are you relating to the black outlined areas on the fire map? This map says they are Emergency Wildlife Closer Areas.

Sorry to hear of your smoke problem, that was us last summer. We have been lucky so far this year, a very mild amount of haze, no smell or noticeable effects on visibility yet. Apparently the winds are blowing east.

My wife and I are planning a motorcycle trip through Idaho next week, I hope the smoke clears a bit. We'll be entering Idaho via I-90 to Mountain Home then via U.S. 20/26 to West Yellowstone. We are going through Yellowstone then up to Glacier National Park and routing back through Idaho and then back to Medford, Oregon.

Your trip on the US 20/26 portion should be pretty good.
We caught a lucky break down here in SEI lat week when some monsoonal rains came. They didn't drop a lot of water on us, but they cleared the air and cooled the temps down. The temps are forecast to remain seasonal through this week, along with decreasing showers for the next 2-3 days.

So for a couple of weeks or so, the air down here will be pretty good and everything won't be as dry and crunchy as it's been all summer.

We had a terrific downpour last night up here, and we expected the air to be clearer today, but we have a mix of smoke from the Trestle Creek fires, and moisture from the rain. It's not very hot, but awfully muggy. The rain felt great, and I hope it helped the firefighters--but it didn't really help the air quality much.

Get yourself an N-95 mask.

Our AC is keeping the smoke out and everything nice and cool but it’s so depressing to see the smoke. We took the boat out the other day and it’s not much fun when all you can see is smoke. Longing for September at this point. Please weather gods, let it rain. And rain. And rain.
