Where is your starting point, packnrat?
Will you be coming in from the east or the west?
Do you have a time planned for the trip?

Answering those questions will probably get you a lot of specific suggestions on some really memorable routes, but in general, just about any 2-lane in the state makes for a scenic ride, and very few are monotonous drives. The Interstates can be monotonous, but that's because they were all built in the relatively few areas that could accommodate big wide 4-lane roads.

Coming back, go out the West Yellowstone entrance on 287 through Ennis, and continue north on 287 all the way to Helena. Then go west on 12 until you reach I-90. Take I-90 to Missoula. From Missoula: go north on 93, and then west on Highway 200 along the Clark Fork River into Idaho, to Sandpoint on Lake Pend Oreille. From there on it depends on where home/the "Real CA" is!

You can also go north out of Yellowstone on 191 (to Bozeman) or 89 (to Livingston) to I-90, they're equally impressive, if I remember correctly. It's been a few years. But I-90 west to Missoula isn't the most exciting road. Still, it's Montana, and you will see mountains.

Lots of good info given so far.....................however, one other very important piece of info:......Keep a sharp eye out for wildlife AT ALL TIMES!!

In my 35 years of living in rural Montana, I have seen and know of several collisions between a motorcycle and a (deer/elk/moose or bear).........at least five that I know of killed the motorcyclist
. Folks that visit here and are not from country that has as much wildlife as we do, are at greater risk........FWIW.

What kind of bike, and are you into gravel roads? I did a 2000 mile loop through Idaho and Montana last summer, about half on dirt, on my bike. Are you looking to camp, or motel? What kind of fuel range does your bike get?

You could join us for the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route next summer!

If you want to do pavement, you need to play on highway 12, from Lolo to Lewiston. The sign says, twisty road, next 99 miles! If you want to get off the pavement into the good stuff, the possibilities are endless-Magruder Corridor, Lolo Motorway, Custer Motorway, and the above IDBDR just for starters.

I was also going to suggest highway 12. But, 12 doesn't go thru Gville. I think the poster means Hwy 12 Lewiston to Lolo.

I'll add that getting off at Orofino and driving Old Idaho 7 to Freeman Creek and back is worth an hour or so. Wonderful views. Awesomely curvy road.
