The poem is not on the book, nor was it written by the French.

It is a poem called "The New Colossus' written by an American, Emma Lazarus, in 1883 as part of a fund raising campaign to build the pedestal. It is displayed inside the pedestal.

and as poetry goes, it was pretty maudlin even then.

Well I guess they had to find some means for trying to replace the billions of dollars of tax revenue which vanished in a single year after they passed their misbegotten 'millionaires tax', don't they?
