It's kind of like the what came first - the chicken or the egg.

Did massive illegal immigration kill our economy, or did the recession kill massive illegal immigration?

Actually they're still pouring over the border because jobs aren't really the main attraction. Food stamps, free health care, WIC coupons, a life of never having to work again, are very very attractive.

As is the attraction of popping out an instant citizen or two or three to gain access to the above benefits.

It's kind of like the entitlements attached to public employee unions. If it weren't for the recession it would have remained hidden until there was no way we could ever deal with it.

That is one of the best articles I've ever read on the subject. He hits the nail right on the head. It was interesting to read the comments from all the "progressives" denouncing the article. I just wonder what parallel universe they inhabit.

^^^^ They live in:

The Elitist Progressive World

Where money flows from citizens pockets non stop, where redistribution of other peoples wealth is the norm and no-one questions The Elitists decisions for they know what's good for everyone else.

They will not be happy until there are two tamales on every plate and 4 cases of Tecate beer in everyone's cooler.

I don't think it's really dead though. The illegals want it more than ever because coming here to work isn't as easy with the lack of jobs. Legal status gives them better access to social security checks when they retire, and of course they want to jump to the front of the financial aid lines and get a college degree so they can make more money than Americans.

Immigration rates in 2010 were up -- that's how unconnected immigration rates are with the economy. As long as there are food stamps, free health care, free housing they'll come.

You're right. I use to think that if we removed the job incentives by implementing e-verify in every workplace that alone would cut illegal immigration way back. I have come to realize however that we would have to remove all means of support for them in this country. That would include welfare through their anchor babies (which would mean we would have to end birthright citizenship) free education and healthcare and all the other freebies that they receive. No legal status to any illegals so that they can tap into these programs permanently.

I agree with all of this.
