Obama may be doing that but he isn't deporting non-convicted felons (you know those so-called good-hearted ones). He has ordered HS to only deport convicted felons.
They are false teeth because no one has chosen to enforce them. Obama has skewed the date to serve his purposes. Until he shows a provable dramatic reduction in the number of illegals present in the U.S., he has accomplished nothing. Bush, hell he said,"If you can get across the Rio Grande, you are welcome." This is not a partisan issue at its roots. It is an American issue that needs immediate resolution from Obama or impeachment. He can't just decide what laws to enforce. He needs to throw the full weight of his office behind the systematic repatriation of all illegals who are surplus to our economy and do background checks and medical exams on all of the others, offering them a green card if they pass after they have paid a fine and back taxes and have passed a real English fluency test.
I agree with Benicar completely. Bloomberg doesn't say how many more immigrants he thinks we should take. I wonder if he would be satisfied when our population equals that of India or China? What doesn't he understand about the adverse impact of population growth on our standard of living and quality of life say nothing about our finite natural resources. Of course, with his billions he will never have any trouble maintaining a standard of living few can aspire to and he can bribe his way to the front of the line for admission to our crowded national parks. We need to reduce the number of legal immigrants to 250,000 per year focused on those who are most likely to help America stay competitive in the global marketplace. Let's look for the applicants with advanced degrees in engineering, medicine, physical science and math. Let's look for the applicants with demonstrated entrepreneurial and other skills that we really need. Adult relatives of citizens should enjoy no priority over others unless they possess these educational and skill requirements.
Completely agree, Ultima. I would only add that it should be based on whether or not we actually need these people while making sure qualified Americans are employed first.
In the U.S., one of the strongest incentives for border violations is the 14th amendment which grants citizenship to anyone who is born in this country. “It is difficult to imagine a more irrational and self-defeating legal system than one which makes unauthorized entry into this country a criminal offense and simultaneously provides perhaps the greatest possible inducement to illegal entry [birthright citizenship].” Originally, the amendment was designed to give full citizenship status to former slaves and their offspring. The authors of the 14th Amendment never would have imagined their words bestowing citizenship on the offspring of illegal aliens, tourists, foreign students, visa overstays, and temporary farm workers. This is one of the central issues related to immigration reform.
The government decries the ineffectiveness of certain measures taken to secure the border but continues to ignore the proven approach of continuous and vigorous internal enforcement based on mandatory E-verification across the board for all employers and all employees. Although some cite an exaggerated multi-billion dollar cost of deporting the millions of illegals, few have considered the obvious alternatives of self-deportation and deportation at the expense of the illegal aliens and their employers. Some say it is not feasible to deport 12-20 million people but logistically speaking that is patently untrue. After the end of WW II 8 million ethic Germans were relocated or repatriated from the Eastern Territories back to the German heartland in less than a year in 1945-6 using a transportation system seriously compromised by the war. We now have modern transportation systems that could handle a much large load. But we don't even need to contemplate a draconian approach to repatriation. We just need to begin to systematically weed out all those who aren't needed for our economy and send them home at their own and their employers' expense. If they came here on a shoestring, they are better off now and can certainly afford the ticket home.
Before they can hire any foreign workers whether they are here already or not, employers must present irrefutable proof that they cannot fill their jobs with citizen labor by offering a living wage,as defined by local unions and the Dept of Labor, and by offering a clear hiring preference.
Employers whose record shows a failure to verify before hiring must be subjected to repeated raid and roundups as well as stiff fines and jail time until they get the message. We cannot let these miscreant employers get away by paying substandard wages under the table while competing unfairly with honest employers. Bloomberg is a national disgrace.
Excellent post, Ultima.
