I assume this is based on the assumption that everyone carries valid ID everywhere?

I think we've been down that road before...

As has been stated, US citizens are not required to carry ID at all times, and even if they have identifying information, that information may not prove citizenship. There have been multiple examples of US citizens imprisoned under suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.

Furthermore, even if it is a situation where a US citizen would be obligated to carry ID, such as driving a car, or the case of a legal immigrant who always must carry ID, sometimes these people do break the law and forget their IDs. The punishment for the crime of leaving your ID at home is not deportation, esp. not for a US citizen.

I've had to mark-up some of your comments for corrections:

...There have also been multiple examples of U.S. citizens being deported under suspicion of being an illegal alien...

...Furthermore, even if it is a situation where a U.S. citizen would be obligated to carry ID, there is no current obligation to state or prove that U.S. citizenship to law enforcement officers or the Border Patrol...

...or the case of a legal immigrant who always must carry their Resident Card, unless they are under the age of 18 [EDIT: or have naturalized to U.S. citizenship]...

...The punishment for the misdemeanor of leaving your Resident Card at home for a Legal Permanent Resident is not deportation...

...The punishment for the crime of leaving your ID at home is not deportation, esp. not for a US citizen unless your name is Mark Lyttle, Irving Palomo, Diane Williams, or one of the other estimated 100 U.S. citizens caught up in ICE mistakes every year:

...A few months ago Mark Lyttle, a U.S. citizen who suffers from mild retardation, was deported to Mexico. Mexican officials then deported him to Honduras, and Honduras deported him to Guatemala. After spending four months in Latin American prisons and homeless shelters, Atlanta airport officials [detained for six days and] tried to deport Lyttle again on his way back to his home in North Carolina...

He did sue in Georgia, after he was afraid to return home...

Who said that deportation was determined by the way a person looks?

Quit twisting everything up and get back to reality, would you?

And that's one reason anyone Legally in this country is required to carry an ID with them at all times!
Any Idiot knows that.

Would you say that someone who was unaware of whether or not carrying ID was legally required would definitively be an idiot?

Do you have a guilty conscience?

Just curious if you believe that someone who had no idea whether carrying ID all the time was legally required, or, even worse, wrongly believed the total opposite of the truth, would totally be an idiot.

Really depends on your term of "Legally". I, as a U.S. citizen, am in the United States "Legally". My younger two stepchildren, Legal Permanent Residents, are below the age of 18, and not "Legally" required to carry an ID with them at all times.

A little clarity is good, especially when you call people "Idiots"...
