Bush wades into immigration debate, says immigrants

The left will avoid comprehensive immigration reform lke the plague now that President Bush has advocated for it - just as he did while president.

I would agree that (Legal Immigrants) are overall a good thing for our country. Illegals like any other criminal enterprise is very bad for the nation.

This is what bothers me about what Bush did. Why did he feel the need to preach about the benefits of immigration when clearly we already know that? It was a deceitful tactic to blur the lines between legal and illegal immigration and force us to think amnesty for illegal immigrants is the right thing to do based on the benefits of legal immigration. It made me sick listening to him knowing he had an ulterior motive. Does he really think we are that stupid? He was just trying to make it look like the Republican party has and should soften their stance on illegal immigration. He was pandering for votes for his party just as Obama did for the Democrat party. These politicians have no morals nor scruples and are willing to throw the American worker/taxpayer under the bus, make a mockery out of our soverign borders and immigration laws all for votes and power. There is no party left to represent us regular Americans for the rule of law.

Immigrants who assimilate into America, not illegal aliens who take advantage of our support system, invigorate our soul.

I agree - and I believe that President Bush thinks likewise.

Could he be behaving politically? It is entirely possible. But when you have a Democrat Party whom insists on blurring the line between immigrant and illegal immigrant - what choice does one have?

The Democrats threw out honesty a long time a go.

At least President Bush is honest - and I believe that he said what he means - legal immigrants invigorate our republic.

It is only due to the Democrats word games that one has to now distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants simply to be understood.

What part of the word "illegal" do liberals not understand?

Agreed. Both parties are in full pander mode right now. Bush was surely being dishonest when he spoke about "immigrants." there is no need to randomly start waxing philosophical about the value of "immigrants" to the nation. He's deliberately conflating illegal immigrants with legal immigrants.

When you say immigants that means legal as distinguished from illegal immigrants. That is why their is a difference in terms. Illegals are law breakers;plain and simple.

You bet he was. Funny, how not one person in the audience he was speaking to challenge him on this obvious dishonesty.

I don't think that he was. He has expressed regrets that his version of the "Dream Act" wasn't passed while he was still president.
And, there does seem to be an organized effort ongoing now to get a conservative "face" on immigration reform.

From another article on the same subject:

"In Washington, leaders of a coalition that unites conservative law enforcement officials and clergy with business leaders — they described themselves as “Bibles, badges and business” — held a strategy session Tuesday on how to push for a comprehensive overhaul of immigration laws, which would include “a road to lawful status and citizenship” for 11 million illegal immigrants.

While several of the conservatives meeting here had expressed their support for legalization measures, they sought to enhance their influence in the coming debate by joining forces.
...
Sheriff Mark C. Curran of Lake County, Ill., which includes the Chicago suburb of Waukegan, said he had undergone “a conversion” on immigration since taking office. He said law enforcement officials should “be honest” in recognizing that the borders could not be secured without giving legal documents to immigrants already here."
